The performance of violence in the LeBaron Mormon docudramas in Mexico

Abstract
The fundamentalist Mormons based in the municipality of Galeana, Chihuahua, Mexico, known as the LeBaron, have enjoyed widespread media coverage following various incidents of extreme violence linked to organized crime groups. This article analyzes the content of docudramas available on digital and streaming platforms to highlight the performative characteristics of this excessive and cruel violence. Disregarding the systemic violence inherent in the social configuration of capitalism, docudramas focus on exposing the villains responsible for the cruelty that Mormon families have suffered in recent years. The performance of violence focuses on the ultra-subjective cruelty embodied by hitmen, representatives of evil, according to the perspective of religious fundamentalism. In general, we find that docudramas reinforce the libertarian ideas of fundamentalist Mormon families based on the Ten Commandments and the teachings of Joseph Smith. In the face of adversity, they propose taking charge of violence by confronting criminals with their own weapons.
