New mythologies for a youth in crisis. Cozy Games and My Time at Portia

Authors

Abstract

For centuries, myths have been an indispensable tool to help human beings understand the world. As time has gone by, their relevance has not diminished, though they require updating to remain relevant. In this context, video games are an ideal tool for their transmission and re-elaboration. This research explores the potential of video games, specifically cozy games, to generate new myths that can particularly appeal the youth. Through the mythoanalysis of the game My Time at Portia, it has been investigated how the different mythemes are incorporated and adapted to the ludonarrative of the selected game. This adaptation has generated a new myth capable of appealing the youth by offering them a narrative with which they can identify and that provides them with a sense of control and belonging, as well as presenting a trauma-free transition into adulthood.
